Is Alcohol an Acne Cure?
We all have one or two unpleasant memories of getting injured and having our mother come to our aide with a bottle of rubbing alcohol. There is little question that rubbing alcohol means serious business when it comes to eliminating bacteria. Our mothers knew what they were doing when they addressed our wounds with this solution. Since acne is partially caused by bacteria, it would make sense for alcohol to be the preferred treatment for the disorder. However, nothing could be further from the truth.
Everyone points the blame to oily skin when it comes to acne. They think that oily skin automatically translates to breakouts. However, this is not usually the case. Other factors need to be accounted for. The same goes for people with dry skin. Dry skin is not entirely to blame, but it is a risk factor for the condition. People falling between either extreme will face an increased risk of breakouts.
The big downfall of rubbing alcohol is that it is extremely drying. It will trigger irritation and leave you more susceptible to acne. Taking this into consideration, its anti-bacterial properties seem of less importance. Alcohol is far from being the perfect solution for clear skin. Many commercially-available treatments actually contain alcohol, which can ultimately stint any progress. So, be sure to read product labels very carefully before investing in any sort of acne product.
If for some reason you wish to continue using rubbing alcohol, at least pair it with a non-comedogenic moisturizer of a quality brand, It will keep your skin hydrated from th harsh effects of the alcohol. Those of you seeking to get relief from oily skin have better alternatives that don’t cause extreme amounts of irritation.
Blotting sheets and specially formulated mattifying products are your bill to oil-free skin. These won’t damage your skin like rubbing alcohol can. If your close friends have also been misinformed and are unknowing damaging their skin, cue them in on these products. You will be sparing them a losing battle.
